CONCERT REVIEW by Sue Paterson
Rev Jeff Hopewell joined forces with the Beaufort Wind Quintet on 21st May to produce a highly attractive programme of songs and instrumental music at Old Dalby Church. Aided by Simon Lumby, whose accompanying skills are superb, Jeff sang (among other things) a range of English songs from the earlier part of the twentieth century, a selection of Gilbert and Sullivan pieces and some by those perennial favourites, Flanders and Swann - for which some audience participation was required (and enthusiastically given!). While there was a pleasant degree of lighthearted music, there was a lovely element of nostalgia and wistfulness: I sat there with the sunlight streaming in, wondering at what talent had been lost through composers such as Finzi and his contemporaries dying in the First World War. But nostalgia was not allowed to prevail: the Beaufort Wind Quintet offered us selections of dance music, some with 15th century themes and some far more modern, including splendid arrangements done by one of their members. So we were entertained by a flute, an oboe, a bassoon, a french horn and a clarinet, all of high calibre as well as by Jeff's equally high quality bass voice. Mention must also be made of the ample refreshments that were enjoyed by all, thanks to the catering squad! It is to be hoped that the evening made a good financial contribution to the church roof fund for which it was organised.
If you missed this evening of culture and entertainment, look out for notices of further performances, because it is certain that word will spread and they are likely to be booked to perform again. And next time I will bring my camera!
